Okay, I'll call it the "Birthday and St. Patty's Day" Edition. I have no problem sharing. It's all good.
Ask me why I'm frowning
- I have an aunt who is the biggest moocher this side of the equator. Once in a blue moon, she'll act like she's getting her house in order, then the next minute she's bumming another $80 off of someone in the fam and not paying them back. Oh well. I guess every family has one.
- I had to work 7 days in a row in order to get my birthday off. Boo!
- No new Heroes episode this week.
- Natasha Richardson may be brain dead after a skiing accident. :-(
- AIG. Seriously dude, WTF!!
Ask me why I'm smiling
- Speaking of moochers, I'll be mailing off the first of several payments tomorrow to reimburse a loan from a close friend. Again, I'm a slow pay, not a no pay.
- I got an e-mail and phone call about a freelance job for writing a grant proposal and portfolio for a civil rights monument being built here in Allentown. :-) Yay! Somebody likes me.
- I have tomorrow off! I don't have any big plans, but I hope it will be a nice b-day celebration.
- It was 57 degrees here today and the sun and weather made my folks' neighborhood feel like a scene out of Leave It To Beaver. So I went for a jog and enjoyed the fresh air.
- My aunt Bonita (not the same aunt as above) was officially granted guardianship of her 3 grandchildren after spending the last 3 years as their foster mother. Nana is now Mama. :-D
- I have both Vital Signs and Near Dark sitting on my TV stand to enjoy from Netflix.
- The incredibly fun and helpful e-mail reply from Katrina yesterday. Thanks sweetie. I'll try to shoot off a reply before I hit the sack tonight.
- I'm still enjoying the hell out of the HAKM. Is smut fiend.
Ask me why I'm ecstatic
- I'm turning 32 tomorrow and never in my life have I ever felt the least bit down about turning a year older. I always welcome the chance to improve on the person I was year ago. :-D
- I may be getting a tattoo for my birthday. Shhhhh. Let's keep this between you and me until after I chicken out.
Yeah, yeah. It's supposed to be "Things on Tuesday," but I like the alliteration of "Things on Thursday" more. :-)
Sadly, the negatives outnumber the positives this week. And I had to rack my brain just to come up with the six items I have on the positive list. Well, as I've mentioned before, it's difficult trying to see the glass as half-full right now. But I'm trying.
I’m lovin’ it
- Heroes Volume 4
- I jogged for 40 min. on my mother's treadmill on Monday after 2 1/2 weeks of inactivity.
- I have new desktop wallpaper. Don’t act like you don’t like it.
- I bought 1/2 of a tank of gas for my car one month ago. I’m only just now reaching 1/8 of a tank because I drive roughly 3 miles per day between home and work.
- I watched The Pompatus of Love via Netflix. It featured the infamous Pasdar sweater (or PaSweater) and some pretty strong evidence of Adrian's admiration for James Dean and Marlon Brando. It was a decent flick. Nothing special script-wise, but it had a good cast.
- I finally purchased the Band From TV DVD. Katrina and I went to one of the two free concerts the band put on for this DVD shoot, and I think I can make out which freakishly tall, Amazon I am in the audience. (That's sarcasm. I'm the only woman towering that high.) I haven't watched all of the DVD yet, so I don't know if I'm in any shots where you can see my face, but I think I remember Katrina wearing her hair in two side ponytails and I was wearing my hair really short at the time. So far, I don't think the sound quality on the CD does the band justice. They sound much, much better live. My favorite song on the CD/DVD: "Will It Go 'Round In Circles" led by Mr. Hugh Laurie.
- I’ve been poppin’ Excedrin Tension Headache pills everyday for the last 5 days. At least one per day, but sometimes 2 or 3.
- What I ate yesterday: a small bowl of ice cream, some Starburst and Skittles from the breakroom at work, and 2 slices of pizza when I got home. :-( Can you say “diabetes,” boys and girls?
- Money’s insanely tight. Huge shock, I know. Too many people want too much too often.
- Can a woman have a Napoleon Complex? Is it a gender neutral phenomenon? Because I think that the only person at my job that annoys the holy hell out of me -- Jazmin, the 5’1” Lilliputian -- loves to overcompensate for her height by feigning managerial skills and riding everyone's asses for no reason whatsoever. That, plus she's wrong about a lot of procedures she corrects you on. ::sigh:: Every place of business has to have one, I guess.
- Anyone of the 35, 45 full-time jobs that I applied for in the last 2 months could actually call me for an interview, you know. I’m not even talking about a job offer here, people. Just an invitation to an interview. Lie to me. Tell me you’re actually considering me for a position. Come on. You know you want to.
- I’m still not sleeping for more than 3 hours at a time. This has been going on for 3 months now.
- I’m still homesick for L.A.
I’m looking forward to
- Watching Cement on DVD. I received it on Tuesday afternoon via Netflix, but I'm waiting until I'm not rushing or exhausted to watch it.
- Despite the pain in the ass that is Jazmin, my Hobbit-esque supervisor at work, I enjoy working with Chelsey, Connie, Lilo and Mel.
- My birthday is in two weeks - March 18th. Kelleah Day!! I don't have anything planned, but I'm looking forward to it.
Makes me smile
- My optimistic outlook on my peri-mid-life crisis
- Not having to worry about food, heat, shelter, transportation, love (you know, the little things) while I'm out of work
- My mother and "Bryan" from Verizon helping me set up the wireless internet connection from my room
- Bank of America's Keep the Change program
- Starting a new workout routine that I hope/think I can maintain -- It's kickboxing mixed with tai-chi!
- Finding quite a few publishing jobs to apply for out here
- New episodes of The Colbert Report
Makes me cry
- The murder of Oscar Grant
- The protest of Oscar Grant's murder that led to rioting in Oakland tonight
- Not being able to sleep for more than 3 hours straight since I've moved to PA
- No genuine bites on my job search so far
- My hair is so dry and fried I can't get it to do anything -- Ugh!
Makes me shrug with ambivalence
- No New Years resolutions or goals set this year. It seems just a wee bit inappropriate this time around.
- If I manage to snag a job down by Philadelphia way, I found this cool graduate school program that I might seriously consider applying for
Something to fume about
- I'm worried about my friend Katie who lives in Houston. I e-mailed on her Sunday/Monday, asking her to let me know if she's okay after Hurricane Ike blew through town. I know that there's been power outages all over Southeast Texas and she may have evacuated to her hometown upstate, but she hasn't replied yet and her blog hasn't been updated since last Saturday. I'm really starting to worry.
- The Livejournal Blackfolk community is a living example of the old adage: A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing. My good, good ness. I've never seen so many folks with just a thimble full of education and life experience act like they know what's best for everyone living and everyone who's ever lived on God's green Earth. Seriously, what the hell! So let me get this straight, you have a 4-year liberal arts degree, perhaps 2 semesters worth of grad school credits, and somehow managed to make it to 30 without shooting yourself in the head while you were bummed about R. Kelly's "innocent" verdict, therefore, it's up to you to teach the world the error of its ways? Either my generation is so f@cking full of themselves that we can't tell which end is up or I'm the only human being in a sanatorium full of malfunctioning robots.
You want to know why people aren't rioting in the streets after Wall St.'s Black Monday fiasco? Maybe because most people still have some freaking common sense and they know that rioting has never done anything but hurt those who are already in harm's way. You want to know why some people found Tina Fey's impersonation of Sarah Palin funny despite her endorsement of Hillary Clinton this spring and her use of the phrase "Bitch is the new Black"? Maybe it's because most of the folks in the community thought she had every right to back the candidate she believed was the best person for the job AND you never bothered to notice that only 4 or 5 people tops found that "Bitch is the new Black" shit even remotely offensive. I could understand how you might have missed that fact with your head firmly implanted up your own ass. I guess that would indeed make it difficult for you to miss the truth. That, and some people just might have found the sketch funny.
And don't get me started on that bullshit about Tim Wise calling out Sarah Palin for flying in an airplane in her 9th month, leaking amniotic fluid, and avoiding a hospital until the very last moment when pregnant with a child she knew would have special needs = [by some idiotic transitive property] denying her her right to choose. Give me a f#cking break with that shit! But, hey, far be it for anybody to disagree with Miss Thing. She did study African-American Studies in college and has many POC as friends. There's no way she could be completely full of shit with those credentials. Sheesh! That community. SMH. A little humility goes a long way, ladies and gentlemen. - I still have no idea what that bug in my bathroom was. All I know is that it had wings, was bigger than a bumblebee, and smaller than a breadbox. Anyone have any ideas? Anyone? I refused to look at it while I put it in the trash. ::shudder::
- It's official. Hipsters = Douchebags If you have to ask why, you wouldn't understand.
- Even though I've had time, I haven't been exercising much lately.
Something to smile about
- I start my new part-time job tomorrow. It's at an adorable bookstore in Studio City. I'll tell you which one after my first day of training. I have high hopes, but I'm still nervous.
- I received my first positive reply to a freelance query. Unfortunately, it's a nonpaying gig, but I could use the clips to get more work. You know, the paying kind.
- House M.D. premiere. :-) Spoiler Alert: House got dumped! Ouch!!
- Even though my search for a gig that will pay all the bills hasn't been very fruitful this week, I certainly haven't been slacking. I've applied to 4 desk jobs (PT and FT), sent 3 freelance writing queries (all magazines), requested 2 references from former colleagues, networked with 1 former Editor-in-Chief I know personally, and read 1 book about trying to find my path/bliss/somethingsomething. Not bad for 4 days' work, right?
Looking forward to
- Starting the new job tomorrow
Down in the dumps
1. I still have residual anger over my job treating me like hot garbage. I know I need to let it go, but when have I ever done that?
2. Apparently, I’m not worthy of employment with Target. Well screw you guys too!
3. I’m way too emotional for this period of transition. I’m swinging from mild panic to optimistic soul searching to tearful anxiety within the course of 10 hrs. each day. I feel guilty every time I’m not actively sitting at the computer searching for work or crafting a pitch letter for a freelance opportunity. Heather and my mother both reminded me that I haven’t been away from my day job for an entire week yet, and that I need to get a grip and quit freaking out. So now, I feel guilty about freaking out when I’m not feeling guilty about working on my job search. Ladies and gentlemen, I think I have a problem.
4. I’ve been home all day for 6 days straight and I still have a sink full of dishes. SMH
5. The schizophrenia currently gripping the Democratic Party. Keep your eyes on the prize and calm the hell down!
6. Little Britain USA is on HBO and I don’t have cable TV. :-(
Sitting on top of the world
1. I have some truly awesome friends and acquaintances. I’ve received so much positive feedback from buddies, old and new, about this abrupt, yet extremely overdue change in my life that I can’t think of a time in the last 5 years when I’ve felt more blessed. Thank you. I know it sounds corny, but thank you so much from the bottom of my heart. ::wipes tear:: BTW, can I come stay with one of y'all when I get evicted? :-)
2. Josh Smith and Christy Paige held a “Save Our Music Careers” fundraiser at North Hollywood Park last Sunday evening and I had a wonderful time. It was just Josh and Christy sitting on stools and belting out tunes in the park, while friends and strangers gathered around on blankets with food, drinks, and kind spirits. I only knew 2 of the people in the crowd when I arrived, but I walked away feeling like I was apart of a larger community of friends who understand what it’s like to be broke, yet happy. Man, I love North Hollywood. Josh and Christy are doing it again this Sunday at 6pm.
3. Hugh Laurie on Leno this Friday!! Yay.
4. This photo is still freakin’ adorable. You know you want to say, “Awwwwww!”
5. Even though my job “asked” me to leave last Wednesday and paid me through Sept. 12th like I was some unstable sociopath that made the workplace oh so dangerous for everyone else in the office, in reality, they did me a favor. I save on gasoline because I’m not driving 15 miles to and from work everyday, and I get to stay home and put all of my attention toward my job search. In other words, f*#! you Richard.
6. I saw Hok from the third season of So You Think You Can Dance and this year’s America's Best Dance Crew walking out of PitFire Pizza this past Saturday. Squee!
I decided to join Vox’s Things on Tuesday group to help get back into blogging. I’ve been slacking over the last 4, 5, 9 months, and I hope this group will encourage me to give my Vox more attention. Since I’ll be pretty busy this upcoming Tuesday, I thought I’d jumpstart the fun by posting my list today.
Things I loathe:
- Bernie Mac passing away at 50
- Working late all week with a bad summer cold and nursing an incoming wisdom tooth that’s making it difficult to eat anything but soup and rice dishes
- John Edwards’ affair (I’m not surprised because he’s a politician and a man, so duh!; but now I’m glad he didn’t win the nomination because the Repubs would’ve eaten him alive with this)
- Gasoline for $4.03/gallon (We're still paying over $4 here in California)
- A $78 charge that I thought had already cleared the bank last month didn’t, so I overestimated how much moolah I had this weekend and I am now broke as a joke until next payday, which won’t hit until the day I leave for vacation
- Having to return a good book to the library before I was finished with it
Things I love:
- Job interview next Tuesday. Wish me luck!
- Seeing Nick Brendon’s play, “Adam Baum and The Jew Movie,” on Friday night
- Got a phone call from my Belgian on Thursday. That’s what I’m calling him. Remember Aleksandr Petrovsky on S&TC. Yeah, he’s like that. ‘cept Belgian, not Russian.
- Gasoline for $4.03/gallon (It was $4.47 back in mid-July)
- Watching The Oblongs from Netflix queue and finally finishing the 1st season of Burn Notice on Hulu.com
- Feeling “up” for 48+ hours in a row
Things I’m looking forward to:
- Vacation starting Friday, 8/15!!!!! :-)
